Lot 2232
Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 33 mm, 24.22 g, 6 h), Rome, 139. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. MAV[R]ETANIA / COS II / S - C Mauretania, bare-headed and wearing short tunic, standing front, head to left, holding crown in right her hand and spear in her left. BMC 1190, note. Cohen 522. RIC 584. Very rare. Light porosity and with a few marks in the reverse field, otherwise, very fine.

From an American collection.

This coin belongs to Antoninus Pius's provincial series, which is similar to Hadrian's provincial series, except on Pius' coins the province is always shown holding a crown in her right hand. The coins are all quite rare, and often come in less than desirable condition. This example, despite some porosity and other marks, is actually quite attractive for the type.
